Food close-up in Oyado Koto No Yume

The hotel offers traditional Japanese accommodation which is an experience for non Japanese. It’s leaving your shoes at the door (the extremely attentive hotel staff put them safely away for you), wearing slippers, a kimono, sleeping on futon mattresses on the floor and having fantastic Japanese breakfast. The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Breakfast in Oyado Koto No Yume

Authentic Japanese experience! This ryokan truly immerses you in Japanese culture, from the traditional amenities to the beautifully designed rooms and breakfast. We loved the room, complete with a cozy bed and a Japanese-style table. The staff was incredibly kind and attentive, making us feel welcome throughout our stay. They even provided us with yakutas to wear while exploring the city, and the Japanese breakfast was delicious. We also tried the private bath, which was a wonderfully relaxing experience. The lobby had a charming atmosphere, offering complimentary teas, a small shop, and origami papers to practice while unwinding. Highly recommended for anyone looking to experience Japan in an authentic and comfortable way!

Property building in Oyado Koto No Yume

This was by far the best place we stayed in all the visits being in Japan. The staff was incredible, they were very accommodating. The facilities were beautiful. The check in was very personal, and our luggage was taken up to our rooms. Everyone was able to choose their own Japanese attire for duration of the stay. The rooms were warm and cozy. Every night we were able to have free sake and choose an essential oil to have in the room. The Onsens were fantastic, one outdoor and one indoor. We had the Japanese breakfast all three mornings and they were different each day which was nice. During the stay you were also allowed to wear a traditional Japanese style coat which we all wore every day and in the evenings. They also offered us hand warmers which was a nice touch. The gift shop was also very cute. We cannot say enough good things about this place.

American breakfast in Oyado Koto No Yume

This ryokan strikes a reasonable balance between authenticity and catering comfortably to its predominantly non-Japanese clientele. The tatami mat room was spacious, with thicker bedding mats than perhaps completely traditional (but I'm not complaining about that - very comfortable!) There was a separate seating area with a Western sofa, small shower room and separate toilet. All very clean. Kettle and tea provided, fridge with water bottles supplied daily. The public baths (indoors and (sort of) outdoors) were very pleasant and scarcely used by the shy tourists! Breakfast was very good and plentiful (Japanese or Western choice) Location is great - just a few minutes walk from the railway station and (in the opposite direction) the old town, but very peaceful side street. Staff very attentive and spoke good English.

Their service is what sets them apart. The moment you step into their ryokan nothing is too small for them to help you with. The entire ryokan is very clean. The room style is on the traditional side. My partner loved the heated coffee table and the antique displays in the room. The breakfast experience feels authentic and on top of what you order there is still a small buffet selection. Their location is superb. Very near the train station, loads of good restaurants nearby and around, and just an 8min walk to the Morning Market. And if you are looking for an authentic experience, 10mins from the morning market there is a little home cafe called Kikaku. If you are lucky you will get to meet a 73 year old Geisha that will teach and show you the arts of her profession. We had such a good time learning and interacting with her.

Food and drinks in Oyado Koto No Yume

Perfect location — convenient for access to train, a bus to the Hida Folklife village, and for walking to nearby restaurants and markets. Peaceful entryway garden. Trading shoes for slippers right after entry created a feeling of welcome and cleanliness. A choice of yukata and obi was a welcome offering. Many thoughtful touches awaited us in our spacious room, like a welcome note and an origami crane. Beds were comfortable. We loved the shoji screens and tucked away places for clothing. Both Japanese and Western style breakfasts were delicious and generous. My husband enjoyed the men’s bath each day. Staff were always kind and helpful. Overall we had a very cozy feeling. Recommended!

Lobby or reception in Oyado Koto No Yume

This was by far my favorite stay during my trip to Japan! The ryokan was much more traditional than others that I stayed at, which I consider a strong plus. The staff were extremely attentive and clearly highly prioritized hospitality. The rooms in the ryokan are spacious and have many amenities provided, including a couch/lounge area. I was given both the standard ryokan yukata to wear inside and my choice of a set of patterned yukatas and obis to wear both inside and outside of the ryokan. I opted to include the ryokan breakfast in my stay (note: the ryokan is able to accommodate dietary restrictions! Tehy reached out to me about this about a week before my stay) and chose the traditional Japanese breakfast, which was absolutely delicious! Other nice features of the ryokan included the onsen, a reservable private bath (which I did not try), an optional scented diffuser for the room that the occupant can choose the scent for, and provided slippers for circulating around the ryokan. Outside of the lodging, the ryokan is well-located a short 5-minute walk from the station and 10 minutes from the downtown area. In spite of this, the ryokan was very quiet at night (I say this as a very light sleeper). I definitely want to stay here again!

Amazing experience to stay for the first time in a ryokan, the staff is very friendly and puts a lot of attention into detail and help you all the time. They guide you to the room, explain the house rules, help dressing the kimono and make the tatami beds on the evening. The public bath is very relaxing and has all the appliances to prepare before and after the bath. We also booked the private bath and it was also very nice. The interior of the rooms extremely traditional and unique, the room is heated and everything is prepared with care and attention. Love the kimono for outside, we went dinner in it and then the yukata for the hotel. I wish we would stay more days for sure and the breakfast was very tasty and well arranged.

Facade/entrance in Oyado Koto No Yume

Our room was traditional with futons on the floor which was very nice to experience. The whole ryokan experience here was wonderful though it was not in the "official" historic Takayama location. The room had a main tatami area, but also a couch if floor sitting was not comfortable Very close to the train station, yet on a quiet side street, and walkable to the historic Takayama area, the morning markets, the festival floats museum, etc. Two types of breakfasts are available, Japanese and Western--I had the Japanese which was wonderful. Very attentive staff (though not too much English). The location near the train station allowed us to stash our bags at the ryokan before going out to explore Takayama and access to the bus station (next to train station) also made it easy as we were leaving by bus. There are many eating options in Takayama, but it is a bit difficult if one does not eat beef. The staff was not really able to point us to good options for dinner but we managed to find the next door restaurant was casual and met our needs, as well as another inexpensive sushi restaurant nearby (and not in the "historic" area) that was very enjoyable..

Spa and wellness centre/facilities in Oyado Koto No Yume

This was a great place to stay in Takayama. The staff were very friendly when first arriving. They'll take you things up to your room when you are checking in. the rooms are a good size Japanese style so you'll be sitting on the floor or bed a lot. There was one small couch. It's only 2 minutes from the station so we had time to eat breakfast at 7am, finish packing and then be at the station for our 8am train by 7:45. The Japanese breakfast was excellent and was a fun experience. It's only a 10-15minute walk to most things you'll want to see in the city.
