Our room was traditional with futons on the floor which was very nice to experience. The whole ryokan experience here was wonderful though it was not in the "official" historic Takayama location. The room had a main tatami area, but also a couch if floor sitting was not comfortable Very close to the train station, yet on a quiet side street, and walkable to the historic Takayama area, the morning markets, the festival floats museum, etc. Two types of breakfasts are available, Japanese and Western--I had the Japanese which was wonderful. Very attentive staff (though not too much English). The location near the train station allowed us to stash our bags at the ryokan before going out to explore Takayama and access to the bus station (next to train station) also made it easy as we were leaving by bus. There are many eating options in Takayama, but it is a bit difficult if one does not eat beef. The staff was not really able to point us to good options for dinner but we managed to find the next door restaurant was casual and met our needs, as well as another inexpensive sushi restaurant nearby (and not in the "historic" area) that was very enjoyable..

This ryokan strikes a reasonable balance between authenticity and catering comfortably to its predominantly non-Japanese clientele. The tatami mat room was spacious, with thicker bedding mats than perhaps completely traditional (but I'm not complaining about that - very comfortable!) There was a separate seating area with a Western sofa, small shower room and separate toilet. All very clean. Kettle and tea provided, fridge with water bottles supplied daily. The public baths (indoors and (sort of) outdoors) were very pleasant and scarcely used by the shy tourists! Breakfast was very good and plentiful (Japanese or Western choice) Location is great - just a few minutes walk from the railway station and (in the opposite direction) the old town, but very peaceful side street. Staff very attentive and spoke good English.

My first time staying in a Japanese ryokan, and it was an amazing experience. The staff were highly efficient, spoke excellent English, and were incredibly helpful throughout my stay. My room was surprisingly spacious for a traditional guest house, although the facilities were a bit dated, and the air conditioner made a funny noise. Despite that, everything else was perfectly satisfying. The staff set up the futon for me, and it was incredibly comfortable—I didn’t want to get out of bed the next morning! The breakfast was generous and featured a variety of delicious traditional Japanese dishes. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I will definitely return and stay longer next time.

Perfect location — convenient for access to train, a bus to the Hida Folklife village, and for walking to nearby restaurants and markets. Peaceful entryway garden. Trading shoes for slippers right after entry created a feeling of welcome and cleanliness. A choice of yukata and obi was a welcome offering. Many thoughtful touches awaited us in our spacious room, like a welcome note and an origami crane. Beds were comfortable. We loved the shoji screens and tucked away places for clothing. Both Japanese and Western style breakfasts were delicious and generous. My husband enjoyed the men’s bath each day. Staff were always kind and helpful. Overall we had a very cozy feeling. Recommended!

The staff were so kind and accommodating, and truly tried to go above and beyond for their guests. Every time we came back to the hotel we were greeted with an enthusiastic welcome back and ushered into the warmth and comfort of the reception area. Breakfast was exceptional and beautifully presented. The hotel also arranged for our luggage to be sent to our next destination which was extremely helpful as it meant we didn’t have to worry about storage lockers during our visit to nearby Shirakawa-go. Overall it was a wonderful experience and we’d be beyond delighted to come back.
